The Christmas spirit

Matthijs left Wednesday morning for a three day tour in Belgium and the Netherlands. He has to do this for his work. He is going to Luik, Delft and Eindhoven. He will return on Saturday evening. I am staying here in Freiburg. For the first time I was on my own. I must admit I was looking forward to it because great things are in the planning.
On Wednesday I was invited to join classmates of mine, for a Christmas dinner. Everyone would bring something for the dinner. I provided the desert. I made brownies for in total 16! Persons. It took me a while to find the address. There was a big church but I didn’t expect that a student would life there. But she did. Most people had arrived already. Than she told us that we had to participate in a short play. Normally I am not fond of acting but what the hag. We practice a bit in the living room. It was a real easy play. So I could handle that, I just kept forgetting what my only line wasJ. We all went outside in front of the church. A hand full of people where already waiting outside. We lit some candles and started. I played a students how got a present and had to give the present away again. It was fun. Afterwards we sang 2 church songs and we went inside real quick. Off course I am not religious but around Christmas it is real nice to come together. The dinner was a great success. We talked and eat al night. It was a real nice change to get to know students a bit better, because normally we don’t have the time to talk real long.
The next great thing was treating myself to delicious Susie on Thursday. I worked on my project all day so I deserved it!!!
Today will be great as well. Four students are coming to my place. I have invited them over for dinner. I am making a curry. They hardly have any India products in the store. So it will be a new taste for them. I have cleaned the house and am now waiting for them to arrive at 15.30.

Matthijs will arrive on Saturday in Freiburg so that will be nice but even better is that our Christmas holiday starts then. On Sunday morning we will pack our backs for a five day trip to the Feldberg (check previous story for photos. We will come back on Thursday the 27 of December. So I want to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Matthijs is woesdag ochtend vertrokken op een drie daagse tour door belgie en Nederland, Hij zal eerst in Luik zijn, dan Delft en Eindhoven. Zaterdag avond komt hij weer in Freiburg aan. Ik ben in Freiburg gebleven en was voor de eerste keer alleen hier. Ik keek er erg naar uit omdat er een hoop leuke dingen staan te gebeuren.
Het begon woensdag avond. Ik was uitgenodigt om bij medestudenten te eten. We moesten allemaal wat eten meenemen. Ik verzorgede zelfgebakken brownies voor 16 mensen!
Het duurde even voordat ik het adres had gevonden. Ze woonde namelijk boven een kerk. De meeste mensen waren er al toen ik aankwam. Ze vroeg ons of we mee wilde spelen in een toneelstukje. Normaal ben ik niet zo’n fan van toneelspelen maar oke. We oefende in de huiskamer. Het was een heel gemakkelijk toneelstukje. Ik bleef alleen steeds mijn ene text lijn vergeten. We gingen met z’n alle naar buiten waar al een handje mensen stond. We staken kaarsen aan en begonnen. Ik speelde een student die een kadootje kreeg en dit weer door moest geven. Na afloop zongen we nog twee kerk liedjes bij het kaarslicht, heel kerst allemaal! Ik ben natuurlijk niet gelovig maar zo is het toch wel speciaal zo met z’n alle. Na afloop gingen we snel naar binnen en begonnen aan het eten. Het was leuk om nu eens wat beter met medestudenten te kunnen praten want meestal is daar geen tijd voor.
Het tweede leuke was dat ik mijzelf gisteren op heerlijke susie heb getrakteerd. Ik had de hele dag hard gewerkt aan mijn project en had het meer dan verdient. Ik heb er dan ook lekker van gesmult.
Vandaag wordt ook weer leuk. Ik heb nu smedestudenten bij mij uitgenodigt. In totaal komen er 4. Ik ga lekker curie maken, er wordt hier bijna niets voor verkocht in de supermarkt. Ik heb de curie pasta uit nederland meegenomen, hopelijk vnden ze het niet te pittig hit is ook wel wat anders dan schweinebraten. Ik heb het huis lekker een goede schoonmaak beurt gegeven en nu is het wachten tot ze komen (rond half 4)
Morgen komt matthijs weer thuis. Dan begint voor ons de kerst vakantie. We vertrekken zondag ochtend al naar ons hotelletje op de Feldberg om pas op donderdag 27 dec. terug te komen. Ik wil jullie bij deze dan ook een prettig kerst en een gelukkig nieuw jaar toewensen.

I have been to a seminar in Hofgut Himmelreich on Friday. Hofgut himmelreich is a restaurant / hotel / academy that have employed handicapped people. This way they learn about working in the hospitality industry and they are integrating in society. The seminar I fisited at the academy was called: „von tabu bis zur selbstbestimmung – sexualiteit bei menchen mit behinderung“. This was a very interesting subject. In my daily work at The Schakel this subject came up on a regular basis, because I worked there with adolescents how where handicapped. That’s way I decided to go.

The town Himmelreich is only 18 minutes away from Freiburg. The train goes in the direction of the mountains and the surroundings are breathtaking. I arrived at there Himmelreich around 5 o’clock. I was afraid that I couldn’t find the restaurant. As I got out of the train it seemed that this wouldn’t be a problem. The town is very small only 2 streets. And right on the other side of the small train station is Hofgut Himmelreich.
I had reserved a table in advance, luckily because it looked like it was going to be a busy night. I got a table near the old ceramic stove. This is typical German. I ordered a Jager schnitzel with home made spatzel. It was really diclinous!
The restaurant is well managed and has very good service. This I find really important. You should go there because the food and service is good not because there are handicapped people working there. I think it is a really great idea to let handicapped people work in hotels and restaurants. This concept integrates my two passions, working with handicapped people (present education) and my love for good food (previous education, hotel management). It was nice to see how it works out.

At 19.00 hour the presentation started. I really enjoyed thinking hearing and reading about the subject of that night. I was able to read more about the subject because I have brought a Dutch school book with me about sexuality, intimacy and social work. So in advance I learned about the Dutch point of view on this subject.
There is a big difference between Holland and Germany already in mentality towards sex and talking about it. But the professor was really open and in my opinion he was very good in respecting the rights of people with a handicap. This is what I find really important. We also talked about how far we can/should or would go as a social worker. All very interesting! The meeting ended at 21.00 hour. I was really tiered afterwards, and got serious head pain because I concentrated so hard, but I learned a lot!

Ik ben afgelopen vrijdag naar Hofgut Himmelreich gegaan. Dit is een hotel, restaurant en school voor en door gehandicapte mensen. Ik ging er speciaal naar toe om op de school een voorlezing bij te wonen over het onderwerp van taboe tot zelfbestemming – sexualiteit bij mensen met een handicap.

Ik ben met de trein naar het plaatsje Himmelreich gereden. Ik was even bang dat ik het misschien niet kon vinden maar dat bleek onmogelijk aangezien het hotel naast het station lag en het dorp niet meer dan twee straten heeft. Ik had een tafel gereserveerd en heb heerlijk gegeten. Het was erg leuk om te zien hoe twee van mijn passies van dit moment lekker eten en werken met gehandicapte zo samen werden gebracht. Het hotel/restaurant zag er mooi verzorgd en profesioneel uit. In de bediening en de keuken werken mensen mee met een handicap. Zij worden heel goed begeleid en alles liep keurig op rolletjes zoals ik dat eigelijk ook minimaal verwacht van een restaurant. Het moet niet zo zijn dat je naar het hofgut komt uit medelijden maar omdat je daar goed eten kan en vriendelijk bedient wordt. Dit hebben zij goed weten te berijken! Gehandicapte mensen krijgen daardoor een volwaardig aandeel in het bedrijf (hetzij ze partime werken) en zijn volledig geintergreed in de maatschapij doomiddel van het hebben van een betaalde baan. Heel interesant.

Maar ik kwam voor de voorlezing. Die begon om 7 uur. Vooraf heb ik me kunnen inlezen over het onderwerp omdat ik een boek mee had over sexualiteit, intimiteit en hulpverleing. (dit is een van de boeken van het tweede jaar SPH) Ik kon me zo inlezen in het standpunt en de regels zoals die in NL geleden. Tijdens de voordracht vertelde een profesor zeer goed over de rechten van gehandicapte mensen en onze positie als hulpverlener bij sexualiteit. Het blijkt nog niet zo makkelijk allemaal. Ik merkte wel dat er een groot verschil is tussen de mentaliteit in Duitsland en Nederland op gebied van spreken over sex. Dit was interesant om te zien. Om negen uur was de voordracht afgelopen en had ik goeie hoofdpijn van het intensief luisteren. Ik heb in elk geval weer veel geleerd en gezien die dag.

Going on holiday at Christmas

Matthijs and I wanted to do something nice during Christmas holiday period. We are not going back to Holland so we decided we would like to go to the highest mountain in Sud-Baden, The Feldberg. We picked out a lovely hotel in the town Altglasshutte with traditional flower balconies and some wooden structure. The hotel also happens to have a fireplace, sauna, swimming pool, ski lift in front of the door, and a good restaurant where they serve a four course menu every night. As you can imagine we are really looking forward to the holidays!
We will arrive at the hotel on Sunday the 23rd of December and leave on the 27th of December. We are hoping for a lot of snow. Check out: Altglashutte webcam.
Luckily there is plenty to do also without snow.

It is also nice that I was able to go to school here in Freiburg. At the beginning it was pretty difficult since I am al alone in the class but as weeks went bye I got to know some great people. On of them is Renate. We went for a walk this weekend. I went to here place in Emmendingen (10 minutes away by train from Freiburg) We packed our bags with some food and drinks and we walked for over 3 and a half hours in a beautiful mountain landscape and woods. Off course I was a bit nervous how it would go since we talk at school but we didn’t spend a lot of time together. Everything went really well. I missed half of the landscape since we where talking so much ;) Today I saw here again at school and we decided to have dinner with three other girls from school. They will come to my place next week and I will make dinner. Matthijs is not there because he has to go to a conference so us girls can talk endless…
I also have a meeting tomorrow with a professor from the School. He is willing to help me with my project and find suitable institutions for my interview. Really great! So I am still doing greats here in Freiburg

Matthijs en ik wilde wat leuks doen met de kerst vakantie. We wilde niet terug naar Nederland dus besloten we naar de hoogste berg van Zuid Baden te gaan, de Feldberg.
Ik vond een leuk traditioneel hotel in het dorp Altglasshutte. Het hotel heeft van die houten balkonnen met geraniums. Het bleek vervolgens ook nog een openhaart, sauna zewmbad, skilift voor de deur en een heel goed restaurant te bezitten waar elke dag een 4 gangen menu geserveerd wordt. Zoals je wel begrijpt hebben we ERG veel zin in de kerst dit jaar! We arriveren op zondag 23 december en blijven tot donderdag 27 december. We hopen natuurlijk op bergen sneeuw Check out: Altglashutte webcam. maar zo niet dan is er nog genoeg te genieten in de omgeving.

Het is zo leuk dat ik naar school kan hier in Freiburg. In het begin was het wel lastig, de taal en alleen in het lokaal zitten waar je niemand kent. Maar nu enige weken voorbij zijn heb ik hele leuke mensen leren kennen. Een daar van is renate. We hebben samen een wandeling gemaakt van het weekend in haar woonplaats Emmendingen (hier 10 minuten vandaan met de trein). We hebben totaal 3 en een half uur gelopen in een prachtige bergachtige omgeving. Het was echt heel gezellig en ik heb eigelijk maar deels van het landschap meegekregen omdat we zo veel aan het kletsen waren. Vooraf had ik me hierom nog zorgen gemaakt of dat wel goed zou gaan. Gelukkig geen problemen op dat vlak. Vandaag zagen we elkaar weer op school, en samen met nog 3 ander meiden gaan we nu volgende week bij mij eten. Matthijs is dan op conferentie dus dan kunnen we kletsen tot we er bij neer vallen ;)
Ook heb ik morgen een gesprek met een profesor van de school. Hij gaat me helpen bij mijn project en het zoeken naar lokaties in Freiburg. Echt super! Alles loopt hier op rolletjes!!!

Sinterklaas and red wine stains

Here are some pictures of what we have been up to the past day’s
Off course we celebrated sinterklaas, we drank Ghluwein and had marzipan. We got a package from matthijs his parents when we visited Holland last month. We where not allowed to open it until the 5th of December. It was a nice evening! And thanks for the great surprises.

Today I had some problems in the kitchen. I was making gravy by poring red wine into the pan. As I turned away from the stove I heard a big bang, and another one…As I turned back the wall and ceiling was coffered with gravy and red wine stains. I didn’t stop exploding, matthijs was brave enough to get close and turn off the heat. We made a quick picture and I could start cleaning…. ARGHHH stains trough out the whole kitchen. First I did a quick sweap and after we finished our dinner I cleaned up properly and all the stains where removed! Thanks to some with wine!

I keep it short this time,aA lot is happening in my project… and we have planed a short holiday but more about this next time.
